General Plastics Received Best Point-Of-Purchase Award

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Robert G. Porsche, President of General Plastics, Inc., recently received the annual Best Point-of-Purchase Award from the Society of Plastics Engineers at a ceremony during the 2003 Thermoforming Conference in Cincinnati. “We are extremely pleased to be recognized for our thermoforming creativity, manufacturing prowess and broad scope of capabilities,” Porsche stated.

The complex award-winning project involved stand alone kiosks to advertise promotional toys in Burger King® restaurants across the country. The highly aesthetic units are successfully capturing the attention of Burger King customers of all ages.

Porsche revealed, “The greatest challenge was to complete the manufacturing engineering at General Plastics’ facility in such a way as to ensure that all 17 components fit and functioned as intended by the designers. We began with prototyping, and tweaked the designs until we were satisfied that all elements would relate well and operate correctly. It was necessary to match pieces and contours perfectly at multiple intersecting points. The complexity of the project gave it an almost jigsaw puzzle quality,” he explained.

While aesthetics were paramount, timing and budget parameters were also important issues in the process. The run of approximately 8000 units included integrating the parts General Plastics thermoformed and trimmed with customer provided metal supports, wood bases and paper graphics. “This complicated project also had a very tight timeline,” Porsche added.

General Plastics collated and packaged the kiosks and their peripheral parts with an eye to ease of assembly at the franchise location. “Part of our mandate was to design the packaging process in such a manner that Burger King employees could easily assemble the displays with their attendant signage, and update the graphics in each as promotions change.”

Throughout the manufacturing process, General Plastics worked closely with the creative team of The Howard Company, Brookfield, Wisconsin, who commissioned the work.
